Thanks Johnptc. That inverter sounds awesome. It's on sale now too! I'm going to also check "Heartland America" online. They usually have great sales on things like inverters. But this one you're showing me here seems REALLY great.

Liz, I envy you that you're in beautiful upstate NY! We so want to get out of FL. Problem is, my husband does commercial construction in Orlando, and most places aren't booming like Orlando is. His job is what's holding us back from moving. Not that he likes construction, but it's what he's done since we're in FL.
MANY people have gotten out of FL since 2004. That's all you saw after the hurricanes...house after house with FOR SALE in front of them.

Ohh, yes, the bugs...the bugs. And when the power goes out...they all come INSIDE! Ugh!!! A nightmare for sure.
The tornados totally destroyed so much near us in Feb. And on Christmas day, one came down in my son's backyard in Sumpter County, circled their house, then took off destroying everything in it's path...for miles and miles. They hit our county too that day (Volusia).
Liz, GOOD FOR YOU that you're outta here. I feel like a sitting duck living here, since we're in this weather pattern.

Thank you .. yes i am glad we left when we did.. The prices and peacefulness are much better up here.. i just could not go through all that heartache and rebuilding..i have a friend in the villages and they were even hit by the tornado's a few months back.. not to say tornados do not happen here..they do, but seldom.. Well i hope all goes well for you this season and it turns out to be a mild one. I have family in Melbourne and i hold my breathe through it too.. always worry.. what part of LI are you from? We are from Centereach,Holbrook area.

It does leave out info on larger invertors. But I think with all the ideas given in this thread, combined with the couple of links listed, there's some good info for everyone to read up on in case of power outages. No matter where you live, it can happen. It's better to know ahead of time.

Liz, I grew up in Lindenhurst (Suffolk) then moved to Nassua County after I married. I mostly lived in Bellmore. I loved it there, and hated leaving. But, the island became way too expensive for us with raising 4 kids. I love upstate! My sister had a house up there in Walton. A gorgeous place to live for sure. :) Now she too is in FL. Ft. Meyers. That tornado that hit the Villiages IS the tornado that first came downin my son's backyard. He lived on the border of Lake and Sumter County.

I know Lindenhurst pretty well..lived in west Babylon, grew up in Carle Place ..know Belmore also.. the island changed so much..went back for my sons wedding and was shocked.. so busy and so built up.. and no more wide open places.. could never go back.. ..i know Walton as well.. took our horses to the shows there.. {belgians} ;)

Hi Ron,
Oh geez, I didn't even think about the tap water not being good. You've got a great setup there! Deltona water is so crappy even when there aren't hurricanes! After those 3 hit hurricanes hit in 2004, they first said DON'T drink the water, then said it was ok to drink, ....

I was in Deltona for all 3 storms. The longest I went without power was 3 days, but I drove to Valdosta the day after Charlie hit and bought a 5500 watt generator. If you can't find gas, try the BJs on SR 46 in Sanford. You don't have to be a club member. They were never out of gas when I needed it, and I never had to wait in line for more than 15 minutes or so.

We had neighbors just 2 blocks away who got their power back on in 3 days, but the rest of the neighborhood was blacked out for a week. Everytime we'd drive in or out of the neighborhood, we were so jealous when we'd see their lights on. But I heard that happened everywhere. That was after Charlie. After Frances, we went even longer without power. With Jeane, we never lost power, but my son who lived 3 blocks away did.

Thanks for the info on the gas. It's good to know. They rationed the gas, so if you could get it, it was needed to get to work. Forget generators. We caught people trying to steal it out of our cars right in front of our house during the night.

We didn't have money for a generator then. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Liz, I haven't been to NY in about 12 years, but did hear how much LI has changed. My husband was in Freeport last year to visit his mom. He said he didn't even recognize LI. Most of my friends still all live there. :)
