You do realize that a rtc in about six months will be 36''?? And will require tons of feeding, tlc, clean water to prevent gill curl, and much more.
wth are you feeding your catfish to get it to 36" in six months and can I have some? i think you mean 24"

A fullgrown RTC will get....yadayadayada...you know 6-8ft. There are way more awesome fish, huge fish, so why the obsession? The heading of "talk me out of it" is a loaded topic, you know the risks, cost and potential loss of yet another great animal just to satisfy some urge to "have".

Get the RTC.

Okay, 5FT. Thats a 2,000 gallon aquarium with REDICULOUS filtration. That is, if you want to properly care for said catfish. You DO want to care for this animal properly, dont you?

Build a 2,000 gallon( minimum) pond, not a Koi pond. Spend a fortune( not a small one) on filtration and enjoy. You already got the scrap piece of rubber, GO FOR IT!
Hurry, before that ultra rare RTC gets bought by someone else! Its okay to hurry on this, after all, its not like you cant find RTCs at every LFS out there! As far as heating the pond, well, the Amazon were they are native doesn't heat the water there either so you should be okay on that. I dont know what you plan on feeding said fish, but whatever you do get prepared to feed it to the fish in large quantities, even at a smallish size.

I'm tired of talking you out of it.

Saying, "Go for it" is easier.

Go For it!!

Get the fish. Then open a special bank account and automatically funnel 10% of your income into it to pay for him in the future.

You wouldn't have 6 kids if you lived in a studio apartment would you?

Not that I really know anyone that does, but I'm sure people do.

Get A TSN instead...
