yup! he still eats like normal and I regularly clean it with one of those gravel cleaners. someone suggested it might be a heater burn haha which makes sense because I can't think of anything else it might be. How do you treat a heater burn though? Put aloe vera on the fish? haha
 
You could use neo-sporin or poly-sporin.
Just keep the water as clean as possible you can add melafix/pimafix as a preventitive to infection-Anne

And buy or make a guard for the heater ASAP
 
are you serious use neosporin? I have some in my medicine cabinet actually, the water won't wash it off? I was thinking of adding melafix but sometimes it changes my water a little yellow and I need to leave for a few days so wanted to keep the water as clean as possible.
 
You'll need to really gob it on as some will wash off but you can use it-Anne
 
It looks like a burn to me, should heal alright but might leave a small scar. Some of my polypterus just can't seem to say away from the heaters, so I put guards on most of them or remove the suction cup (and let it float freely in the tank).
