Let me start off by saying I have kept freshwater stingrays in the past with success but with my move to California I had to leave them in the care of one of my most trusted friends and now I'm interested in housing a Cortez round stingray or possibly a California Round Stingray. I have seen them readily available in some of my local fish stores but not as available at the same amount of coral cat sharks or blue spotted rays. From what I've read so far the the Cortez and California round stingray stay relatively small at a max of 18" in captivity maybe smaller not a hundred percent sure. So I would originally house it in a 4'x2'x2' tank till the pup grows to a decent size and I make the move to a more adequate tank or indoor pond depending on what I can obtain easier. From what I've read on them basically just skimming through various forums is that the California round Stingray requires lower water temperatures so I would need a chiller but that the Cortez round ray can thrive in the low seventies? Please correct me on this if I'm wrong. The one thing I am worried about the most is ordering a Cortez round stingray and then obtaining a California round stingray and having the incorrect temperature for the California round to thrive. If you guys have any books that you could recommend to me I would greatly appreciate it or any tips at all. TY

If you can go low to mid 70s for temp you'll be just fine. Other than that, they are very basic when it comes to rays. I'd suggest getting the tank up and running for awhile prior to adding a ray. The bring a big bioload to the mix, and don't do well in young systems.

I have had it setup as a fowlr tank for around 4 months now with about 95 lbs of dry/live rock, my plan in the long run would be to move around 30 lbs of of the live rock once its seeded into my 40 gallon and make a stacking formation with the remainder of the lr at the corners of the tank to give the young ray a good amount of room in the middle and make it like a lagoon. So hopefully after a good amount of research and after my tank is established for a year or so I will attempt housing a round stingray.
