All the talk about crossing fish breeds makes me ask a simple question. Is it really easy to cross breed? Do any pair male and female eventually mate. I realize it is looked down apon by some. I just wondered if this occurs in nature,if wild bred fish will cross breed if no other mate is there..

It is easy to crossbreed certain types of fish like cichlids, but not all fish will crossbreed. Like a silver dollar and an oscar can't produce fry together but different cichlids are pretty easy to cross.

I have also seen some pictures of natural occuring hybrids of cichlids from lake malawi.

flowerhorns and parrots are not "naturally occuring" hybrids. ;)

and no, putting a male of one species with a female of another species (even if they're closely related...heck even if they're the same species) doesn't mean they will breed.

i agree,it all depends how racial your fish is,lol.try meeting the breeding requirments for both species and you could end up with hybrids

I got flamed for asking a similar question a week ago so I stopped asking on here but from what I have read it seems fairly easy I know there are a few naturally occuring native fish in the waters of my home state (pa) tiger muskellunge (muskellunge x northern pike) saugeye (sauger x walleye)
