Hybrid Catfish Discussion thread.

This particular hybrid does seem to be a bit more skittish than others. You may just have to give it time. Even my ID shark calmed down and accepted my hand after a few months. If your hand goes in the tank quit often and never harasses them my theory is that they accept your hand as a non threat. Eventually they can put together that your hand=food. I was able to hand feed the one I had, but I purchased it at 14" and the previous owner had been hand feeding it since it was tiny. Sometimes it might tank a long time. I even had a large lima that after 3 years finally started feeding from my hand as well. I'd say just be patient and make sure when your hand is in the tank that it is always non threatening. Eventually they should get use to it. I would feed fish fillet, shrimp, and chunks of hot dogs to mine from my hand. He would strike it quick unlike the other hybrids I had that would come up and investigate and expect more. You could tell he was very predatory. I would sway the food in the water from my fingertips to entice him, and he would follow it with his eyes. When he was satisfied it was food he would strike it quickly and return to his hole to swallow it and wait on more lol.

I really appreciate that. :) It was my goal in the past to show that just about anyone that has the space and some ingenuity can properly house large catfish for life. I guess with the way I am going now that I am back I am doing the same lol. i really miss all those hybrids, and as many already know my ultimate goal is to produce some hybrids myself. I absolutely love catfish. They amaze and fascinate me each and every day I learn something I did not know before. The people on this and other forums have taught me more than I have taught them for sure. I am hoping not only to produce some cool looking hybrids, but also send some of these specimens in for study by experts as hybrid catfish may have potential to help us beyond making good pets. :) Hybrid vigor and the resulting immunity to illness that happen when it's done right are of particular interest. Usually crosses will only work one way. If you don't get the sexes in the right order you will get an inferior fish that will get illness much easier than when crossed the other way. I have been doing ample research on the production of hybrid catfish for years now. I'd love to try my hand at it someday in the near future. It fascinates me to think of the possibilities. Hmmm, I remember an old thread I think I will link to this one as well. brb lol.

Here are some pics of all the hybrids I have personally owned. Doesn't seem like that many to me lol.
