i just posted a similar thread in the bottom dwellers forum because i need to move a fish and there is a fellow member wityh an outdoor pond ready, but it is not heated. i have a tsn x rtc hybrid that is going to be my first fish gone but i would love to find a happy and suitable home. will the outdoor pond here in san diego work without heating it?????? HELP! PLEASE! any experienced SoCal pond keepers???

It might work but I'm going to need some more information before I can say it will be okay. What's the dimensions of the pond? what is it made from? is it above or below ground? is it filtered? how much sun does it get?
It would most likely be fine for the summer but get back to me on the other questions above.

Pond size and depth look good.

Maybe a solar cover (bubble wrap pool style) could be used on cold nights to retain heat. Minimize splashing on cold nights as well.

Sorry to say but it will not work. Only channel catfish and some of the other catfish you find in the water around san diego will work. You might get away with it for two months August and September if your pond is in full sun most of the day but nights here are still dropping to mid 60's.

I live in SoCal and have an outdoor pond. I had a large common pleco outgrowing my tank so I put him in the pond. He survived all summer long and even thru fall. But the true test was winter. That year we had some real cold winter nights and the water temp dipped to low 50's. next morning found a stiff pleco carcase on the bottom of the pond.

you will need a some sort of heating device or system during winter months
