I am very curious why is SP frown upon other than ASIA, has it become a taboo to keep SP? From my point of view as a hobbyist (shallow view point), I do not really mind as long as the ray is healthy and beautiful. Maybe some of the forumers can educate me (or ppl from ASIA) why it is impt to keep the bloodline pure and why human induced hybridization degrades rays? I've really got no idea :(. :chillpill:

never said it degrades rays.... hybrids are nice... but when you can no longer tell what the blood lines are you have a problem... ive seen many SP rays in asia i would sell my left :naughty: for.... some are amazing stunners... i am not against it but for the most part its better to keep the lines pure... who knows next year all of south america might shut down... then what do we do with a bunch of SP rays... me personally i would only hybrid black rays the black SP are the ones i  over 90% of the time ;)

I just want to see the individual morphs preserved as best as possible.
Like Nic said who knows what will happen in the future concerning availability.
If hybridization is done I feel it should be kept at a minimum and be tracked for future breeding purposes.

agree with Nic..I like pure line rays...i have to admit that some of the sp turned out to be gorgeous...but still i can accept the sp like pure line x pure line....not sp x sp...

Health issues are also important. What are you doing to the ray if you breed a small mouth variety with a large mouth variety? or small stomach with large stomach? small teeth with large teeth? or rays that mature fast and have small litters X with rays that grow bigger and have large litters? What recessive genes are getting mixed up that might mean your shiny new hybrid that cost an arm and a leg will only live a couple of years if its lucky. I bet the folks hybridizing their rays don't even know that there are differences
If you cross Leo with motoro and get a bunch of Motoro looking pups are they motoros? Will the breeder disclose that they are crosses if they look like Leos?
Part of what makes rays fascinating is their ( natural predatory) behaviour. That is also being altered. Other fish species that have undergone generations of inbreeding and outcrossing to produce fancy colors are totally ****ed-up, with health problems of every description, communication problems, reproduction problems etc etc, all for the sake of a few $$s for something 'new'. But its just a fish right?! :(
" oooh...shiny object".....
"I love you just the way you are....now change"
Its only idiots that would allow ( or force) a doberman to breed with a chihuahua

THANK YOU!

Me I'm a fan of pureblood over hybrids. But for discussion sakes then when we take a motoro from one river system and breed it with a motoro from another river system are we still keeping pure genes or are we causing problems with the bloodline?

same species.
:)

Just wondering? They are the same species but would all the years of seperation from each other cause alot of gentic differences?
And how far off is a leo genetically from a motoro?
Just curious with you mentioning about different traits on rays and how hybridization could cause health issues. So are some species more genetically compatabile than others eg. Leo x motoro over leo x shroderi
