hybrid new world chiclids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cryptoheros can breed very small. Are you sure the eggs were eaten before hatching? Is the female guarding an area near a gravel pit or object? They often move the fry after hatching to another location until the egg sacs are consumed. You'll know in a day or two. Either there will be a cloud of fry or nothing at all.

Why are you encoraging this? if the fry do eventually grow out hopefully they get used as feeders rather than passed around the hobby, making it harder to find pure cichlids

Did i encourage him to sell the fry? I just told him to give the pair a few tries to get it right. Clearly OP is curious about how the fry are gonna look like so im in no way gonna stop him from doing what he wants cause it's HIS fish.

People like you make me laugh. Just cause I told the OP to give his pair time you jump on me like im gonna buy the whole batch of fry to resell to others.

Precisely.

On topic: Of the hybrids I've seen, it seems that there are a few distinct patterns of inheritance:

1.) Convict/HRP bars gets passed on fully.
2.) The firemouth underside gets passed on (not necessary the color, just the flappy skin thingy).
3.) H. carpintis and cyanoguttatum pearls get passed on pretty well.

Sajicas themselves have bars so chances are that the progeny will all have bars (assuming your convict isn't a pink convict). Otherwise most convict hybrids are pretty plain, i.e. more monochromatic than anything (besides the bars), i.e. probably exactly like Rafini's hybrid.

Precisely.

I've seen a lot of convict hybrids and usually they take the shape of the other fish and keep the convict markings. I actually wanna do a project where the convict will take markings of whatever fish is it crossed with or since the convict markings are always showing I wanna cross my marble cons with other fish.

There are no guarantees when it comes to hybrids...

Hence the 'it seems'. Prolly should have mentioned more clearly that the patterns are not absolute. Hence patterns. :P

@japbart: Lol do it! I wanna see what happens. :))

Alright. I probably need to grow my marbled cons. The females are almost at their max size. Should I use a female or male marbled con?

theres always 1 poster who gets butt hurt as soon as they find out 2 diff fish r breeding. even tho op clearly stated theyll be feeders in his set up. never fails

I would use them as feeders if it were me. Sajica's are beautiful, much more so that a convict, but are they not in the same family as a convict? I remember reading about something about convict/sajica cross breeding somewhere else too,
