I currently got two kinda small oscars in a 120g tank, and Im thinking about adding one more fish before I close the lid and let them grow. I'm kinda new to the hobby and dont know anything about breeding.

Ive seen alot of pics on different crossbred chiclids but no oscars
- Dont they crossbreed? and if they do, is it possible to breed all kinda chiclids as long as they dont kill each other?

-the pair I have now (still dont know their sex) is one tiger and one red. What kinda oscar would that make?

thanks for anwsers :nilly:

Tigers, albinos, lemons, commons... their all in essense the same fish.

As far as i know, it is only possible to cross fish from the same genus, and the only fish in the oscars genus... is the Oscar (and some regional variants along very similar lines)

So, i'm sure you can cross breed oscars with fish from the same genus (Astronotus crassipinnis, Astonotus sp "venezuela", Astronotus sp. orbicularus) but i've never seen the results, and im pretty sure genetically their still oscars :D

Take a look around the forums for rare oscars, there are some real beautys out there

Actually there are lots of cases of cross genus breeding with cichlids. Petstore oscars are most likely all one species just line bred for different colours. If you crossed any of the Astronotus species together (e.g. Astronotus ocellatus x Astronotus crassipinnis) then you would be making a hybrid fish.

Most pet store oscars likely have different species bred into them. Unless wild caught, I think most domestic oscars are just considered Astronotus sp. And yes, it is normally within a genus that crossbreeding occurs, but it is definitely possibly across genera as long as the fish are somewhat similar

...But, seeing as you don't have any of the rarer Oscars at hand, you wont be making a true hybrid fish :) you'll just be muddying the waters a little.

Give it a go though. Personally, i'd stick with 2 oscars, hope for a pair and miss out the thrid.

Best of luck

Then the big question is - what kinda oscar do I have? It was sold as an ocellatus but looks like a orbicularis, but with a sharp orange colour (at least compared to the images on google). I'll try to get some pics of him for Id. If thats the case I think a oscar/oscar hybrid will be a good starter :turtle: Although theres still some excess space.. hm hm dum di dum
