i call BS until i see pics even then i still won't believe you.

there has not been enough (read: ANY) genetic studies to even confirm whether hybridization between these species (or any pygocentrus species) is possible.

there are red bellies that develop slight humeral spots like caribes but these are still not hybrids the givaway is still the shape of the head (less bulldog like than most caribes) and the colour of the eyes (red, cariba's eyes are always clear)

i never really lookind into this untill i saw the thread i jus went with what my lfs told me.. anyway what iv found the last couple days is agreeing with you guys. from what iv found the only consistently bred piranha in captivity are nattereri and thats that. but whilst were on the subject can anyone shed some light on the ternezi for me?

Ternz are awesome. There's a store near me that has 3 atleast 10 inchers1.

Do you mind showing us pics anyways? You said earlier that you kinda believe your lfs and it'd be cool to see what gave you that impression.

As JP said sometimes reds can get humeral spots (he has seen my one with them) so that kinda makes them look like a dark caribe.

There not black humerals but they are there.

i do see a faint humeral spot there, nice p's bro
mine are getting dark like that and im really digging it

speaking of which one of mine has a flame like pattern on the red on it's belly it dosen't go all the way up the back like a piraya but it still looks equally nice. piraya hybrid-wannabe maybe ? it also dosen't seem to be getting any black pigmentation unlike it's brethren, many of whom are a charcoal grey colour with red bellies.

I've seen reds, ternetezi and even piraya with humeral spots, not mine of course but pictures posted by other owners and found on the internet.

They haven't cross-bred in aquariums but who's to say they haven't in the wild? There could be tons of cross-bred red bellies in our tanks right now n we don't even know it!just because a rbp don't look like both(rbp n caribe)doesn't mean its not there in the gene pool.without proof (which there is NONE)everyones just guessing!
