Just my 2 cents but I think you should just pick a species and breed it instead of creating a hybrid.

Why? How is that any worse than lets say inbreeding animals like ball pythons to get new color phases. I doubt he is going to breed large scale so I dont think its a big deal if he has a few hybrids in his personal pond.

First off that's a really bad example. You're talking about crossing two animals of the same species. A BP x BP = BP. The OP wants to create a hybrid not a color morph. Hybrid reptiles are more frowned upon in the herp community compared to the fish community and in my opinion it's somewhat irresponsible too. Has the OP ever bred ANY reptiles before? I think he should try breeding a particular species first before he takes his hand at creating anything else. Like I said, that's just my 2 cents.

Oh boy. The old hybrid argument again. OP, do what you want. I used to have a hybrid red x blue tegu. Thats no different, and theres no problem with it at all, and its not irresponsible. People seem to think its an issue, and for the life of me i dont know why.

I would just like to know one solid reason why hybrids are bad. Even if the person is selling them, as long as they're advertised as hybrids, there is NO problem. People just want to make it a problem. Thats all there is too it.

Most of the problem is the forgetting of the hybrid cross in later generations, where someone doesn't pay attention to the genetics of the animal, and the wild-type gene pool of a species in the hobby becomes muddied with the genetics of another species. If the OP sells them advertised as hybrids, he's done the best he can, but it will be forgotten sooner or later.

Theres also the risk of the offspring escaping or being released, allowing them to intergrate with the natural population. Some hybrids occur in the wild, but it could be risking in an area where only one of the parent species is naturally occuring.

Personally, I wouldn't go for breeding hybrids, but its up to you ultimately.

Paul

On top of that, there is a symptom known as "Hybrid Vigor" where hybrids usually turn out larger, stronger, and more aggressive than the parent species so if they did escape and establish themselves, it could be the end of local turtle populations. Im not saying you would but it is possible that you sell it to someone who would let it go (I was guilty of letting some RES go when I was a kid and I am sure lots of others would do the same).

It would also be better to try and breed a well documented species so that you know how to do it rather than attempt something new where no one really knows how to breed or incubate.
