Hyde's aquascapes and fauna

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the idea, I'll give it a try.
Today, after small water change, a very nice thing happened: when lights turned on, very small bubbles began to form on all the plants and places where algae is most intense. As far as I know, this happens when plants photosynthesize and are healthy and there is enough oxygen in the water.

P.S. probably will try after few months, since left "trees" doesn't have leaves yet :)

Ok, short update and a question: Since it's hot in here, tank temperature rised to 28 Celsius. What do you guys do to cool the tank down? Also - is it a problem for bichir and calabaricus' a 28 Celsius temperature? (I'm changing small portions of water and able to drop it down to 27...) Or maybe they can live happily in this temperature?

They are pretty tolerant of high temps it seems, but if your worried throw in a ice pack/cooler pack

Update: everybody is living happily. When eating and searching for food, calabaricus' sometimes bite each other and release after a few moments - just showing each other leadership. Polly, as always, first to the food and gets the biggest chunks. Amano shrimps as of today, all alive.

Looking good, are the trees recovering yet?

Yes and no. At the beginning, there were all 5 trees with leaves, but after some consideration, I decided to put anubias from 2 on the right side to the ones on the left. The ones on the right will get their leaves, when LFS will get anubias :)

UPDATE

To begin with, a little sad news. Firstly, algae was starting to be an issue, because of the high tank temperature (28 celsius and even 28,5 at times) and demanded quite a good cleaning. Also one of the bamboo shrimps died. Simply one morning the male shrimp was nowhere to be seen and that stays still. Kind of MIA. The other shrimp molted in my eyes, started running everywhere in my tank, calabaricus were going scared and crazy too, but everything settled after few minutes. However, because of the new addition to the tank (and I seen the new fish attack it when the shrimp decided to go to the top of the tank) I decided to rehome it.

Now the good news. When taking pictures of my tank, the star is obviously polly - he just swims to the glass whenever I'm near.

One of the Amano shrimps has caviar, but after the 2 fishes added, amano shrimps decided to hide and since they are good in their camouflage skill with clear body this is the few I could locate:

First Fish: Black Ghost Knife. As far as my fish keeping goes, it's the most shy fish besides plecos, so the best picture so far is this. At night, I went to my tank and it was somewhere else swimming...

Now the second fish: since everybody will start to flame, that it's too big for my tank and blah blah...I'm thinking of keeping it for 6-9 months and returning. Talked with LFS owner and he's ok with that. It will be a short "guessing game", since you'll probably get it right in few minutes. A little info about it: acclimatization went good, the fish is swimming around, even ate on the next morning (even though at the shop, owner fed him a little before it went to the container), besides the fact, that there are many topics that it's hard to feed them and they starve... Also, they are known as shy fish. Mine swims slowly to the middle of the tank when I come closer, but then turns around and comes back. Also not scared of my two crazy cats, which prefer aquariums to view through window. Also, since it's a constantly moving fish (not like polly or calabaricus...they are about 50/50), the tank became with motion and after that I decided to shorten the previous list of fishes I wanted to aquire and possibly will add 1 pleco for algae control and that's all. So, try to guess it and I'll soon post the photo :)

Ok, since nobody is trying to guess, or maybe planted tanks isn't so popular part of the forum, I'll introduce it (mainly because I won't be around for a few days). Silver arowana. On the first day it tried to jump few times, but because of tight lid (mainly for calabaricus') attempts to escape were unsuccessful. After those attempts, it stopped, so I think so far everything is ok.

What do you guys think - how big/how long arowana can live in 65 gallon tank?

Also, BGK ate this morning, came from his cave and looks friendly - tries to get to the side, when I come near tank.

I dont have much experience with Aro’s but if i remember correctly i think they grow around an inch to 1.5” a month for a good year???

So you can maybe use that as a guesstimate for how long it will last...

As for cooling, are these temps for prolonged periods of time or just a few days at most???

Coz you can DIY computer fans to blow air across the tanks water surface to help cool the tank by maybe 1-2’C...

Otherwise you can do what a lot of us in Asia do and invest in a chiller if hot weather is something you deal with for long periods of time...

I dont want to flame. I do have concerns though. It looks to be dyed I have seen that lately a lot. It not good for long term health of the animal and will fade soon. Also as a top predator you may end up with some issues with it trying to or eating your ropes especially when they surface for air. I wish they stayed in the 12" range id have them too. I would have deffinatly saved the "strawberry" aro and then probably the "blueberry" and "lime" ones they got in a couple weeks later. Hopfully your lfs will take it back later when the colors return to normal.
