Hydor ETH 201 inline heater?

I couldn't find much user feedback about them other than this thread before I bought mine.....Its a GREAT heater and anyone with a canister filter should get one. I like it so much better than my old submersible heater. First of all its not extra crap in the tank, no wires going into tank, and I dont have to worry about forgetting to turn it off during water changes. I turn if off anyways, but if I don't it has an auto-shutoff. The standard submersibles just melt rubber and break if they run out of water.

On my 125 I initially ran one 200w marineland stealth heater, attached at one end of the tank right under the output of my canister filter. It kept the tank at around 75 degrees (measured by thermometer at the opposite end of the 6 foot tank) if it was set at 80.

Those stealth heaters got recalled and I got the free visitherm 200w from marineland (and returned the stealth to petco for $37 gift card and got $25 refund from bigals all for the same heater but thats another story haha) which broke the 2nd day for whatever reason. Then I got a refund for that one and tried the 200w hydor inline heater on my eheim 2217.

It keeps the tank at 78 (measured at other end) when I set it to 78. This isnt the best way to compare but it does tell that the same wattage inline does a better job heating the whole tank than the submersible one, and I didnt have to set it higher to get the right temp.

Also, the manufacturer ratings say the hydor 200w in line is for tanks between 25 and 50 gallons....!!!!!! it heats my 125 just fine to 15+ degrees above room temp at night.. i don't know how often it turns on over a long time interval, but at night when my lights arent doing any heating the indicator light on the heater only comes on for 30 or so seconds every 5 minutes or so...in other words it doesnt seem to be being overworked on my big tank.

Once I buy a "kill-a-watt" ill test how much electricity it actually uses in 24 hrs and compare it to a submersible 200w heater

Overall best heater on the market tho, and DEFINITELY worth paying an extra $20 for IMO

I have 2 300's on my 180. My output is split so there is heated water coming out at each side of the tank. One thing I would love to see them do is make the heater so it can be hard plumbed.
They can be hard plumbed,if you remove the hose fittings but taking the case apart then you can get a 1/2 BSP connector that will screw into the heater and then can be joined to PVC ideally 1/2 BSP to 3/4 socket. If you do decide to do this make sure you use a union at both end just in case it needs removing for cleaning or replacment.
Just as a side note it may be a different thread in the states, but the UK ones are BSP.

Well I just picked up two for my 150g since I am currently using two Marineland Stealth heaters on it.

I"m excited!

The Hydor ETH in lines are great heaters. I use 2 of the 300 watt ones on my 120g. I know that only one is really heating the tank since the temp setting on the other is set quite a bit lower and it never comes on. So even though it is rated for 80g it does fine with my 120g. I will be moving both of these over to my 210g that I'm setting up.

I did a little experiment for efficiency...got a kill-a-watt and measured out much electricity a 200w visitherm submersible heater uses vs a 200w Hydor ETH on my 125g.

The Hydor used 5.11 kWh in 24 hours and kept the tank at 78 when set to 78

The submersible used 1.86 kWh in 24 hours and kept that tank at around 73 or 74 when set to 78

Taking everything into account I'd say the hydor is more efficient...the submersible would probably use more energy to actually keep the tank at a given temperature than the hydor. This would also indicate the hydor can handle a tank than its underrated for much better than the submersible can.Overall I like it much better...no equipment in the tank.
I put a thermometer at both ends of the tank and there was no uneven heating for either heater. i did the tests on consecutive nights starting at the same time. I tested the submersible first, which gave it an advantage at the beginning b/c the tank was already heated to 78 by the hydor. Also the hydor got a disadvantage when i put it on the tank for testing after the previous test of submersible leaving it at 73 degrees.
The Hydor is plumbed in the 2217 with no spray bar and the nozzle at one end of the tank pointing towards other end. For the submersible I put it right in front of the output nozzle of the same 2217 facing the same direction to try to get circulation for the two heaters to be as similar as possible for the test.
