Hydor Koralia Evolution pumps for ca/sa tank

I'm buying new pumps cuz the generic crap I got at petsmart a few months ago is just wasting space and not doing anything at all. I've seen the Hydor Koralia pumps used a lot in both fw/sw tanks, now I just wonder how many I need and how much power.

I'm ordering right now two of the 1,400 gallon per hour ones for my 120 gallon (5 feet long) ca/sa community tank... is that enough, too much, too little? The biggest fish in there is about 4" right now.

I had 1 of the 1400gph in my 125 and I felt like it was way too much current. It was so strong it blew all the sand to the side if it faced down. Those things are no joke. GREAT quality...or at least the ones made 5 yrs ago were. I see that theyve changed styles, but Ill bet theyre still great quality.

2 will be an absolute whirlwind underwater no matter how you adjust it unless its straight up. then expect to see your food stuck up under the lids haha. Thats what mine did because at one point i had them so close to the surface.

Im looking at 1 for my 120 now and thinking of going with only 5x turnover rate. i just need it to move the water in the back portion of the tank some.
 
I also have a 1400 in my 6 foot 125 and it's plenty. I can't imagine two. If I point it at the sand there is no more sand. :D Mine is positioned on the right side of the tank, and it points toward the front panel of glass in the middle of the water column.

They are an excellent quality powerhead, you will love them.
 
lol... thanks god I asked. well the problem I have is that the tank is really tall and all the crap sits on top of the sand in the corners behind the rock/driftwood caves. I just want to get rid of those dead spots cuz I don't wanna have to move the decor around every time I do a water change.

Should I get 1 1400 one or maybe 2 750? I'll explain better with a picture just a sec

You can see the overflow for the sump (20 gal sump below the tank) and I also use a HOB (AC 70) to place purigen and some other filter media that I need to be constantly monitoring to regenerate when it gets exhausted.

You have a 45g sump right? Or something close?

In all honesty, in my 265, I never vacuumed anything and just did 50% weekly changes and let the waste decompose. I literally never vacuumed anything up. I had sand substrate and TONS of live plants/wood/rocks and just never felt the need. the waste would get hidden under everything and eventually just dissipate.

Now, if waste had been in sight, I probably would have done something about it...but I never saw it.

I think in that large of a water column (or even in a 5ft 120 which is one of my current setups as well) with a sump It didint really matter.

Now, I always understock my tanks so it wasnt a concern in that aspect.

Does that make me a bad landlord to let them wallow in sh**?:irked: I hope not.
 
I only want it gone because I can see it from the sides and I'm kinda obsessive with it being clean lol... I just assume if the debris is accumulating there then I don't have enough water flow and it's detrimental to the fish.... but I don't really have any water quality problems.
