Hydro. Scomb 1 year Anniversery

I have always wanted to try to raise one of those myself but have always worried about "scomb sudden death" I always hear about 
, I heard armatus are hardier but I don't have 1000+ galllons of fish tank available lol
what is the common sizes for scombs ? 8-12 iches?
