Hydrogen Peroxide

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Be careful and search around for info. I've heard of this really screwing up the PH, but I'm not sure of that. I'll see what guppy has to say

Make sure your hydrogen peroxide is fresh. It quickly turns into water. I know the bottle that I have is several years old, and I doubt it would help at all.

Howdy,

as has been stated, hydrogen peroxide is a last resort for emergencies! Before fish die a certain death during a days-long power outage, you can try to save them with hydrogen peroxide. As rallysman said, it screws up the pH: Most solutions are stabilized with phosphoric acid. Regarding the koi link: I think it's useful info, but there is something substantially wrong with a set-up if the guys developed a standard-procedure for H2O2 applications. If you know you have problems:
  1. install additional aeration (air pump)
  2. get a battery-powered aerator for power outages
  3. get a generator if you live in regions with frequent natural disasters (FL, LA,...)
All this is much safer for your fish than experimenting with H2O2.
Topical application for algae treatment, followed by water changes, does not pose too high of a risk because you work with lower total-tank concentrations.
