Wats the main difference betwen these two in appeareance and growth capability? Anybody kept these payara? And can either 1 be comm with and atf and ace? Thanks....

Here's a good website...

http://www.opefe.com/hydrolycus.html

It discusses some differences in the Cynodontinae subfamily, which includes both those fish you asked about.

I keep mine, Hydrolycus scomberoides, with some tankmates. I find the biggest problem is getting them food. Mine only takes live feeders up to this point, and I have had some problems with him getting his share. All of the other fish in my tank seem to snatch them up before he can get to them. I think I'll separate him in to his own tank soon.

I haven't kept ATF's before, but from what I've heard, they may be too aggressive of feeders for these guys. Payara are also not very aggressive, so they may get picked on by aggressive tank mates.

Thanks dacox. The website has been most useful. Just can't resist the fangs of the payara. Though i've read that keeping a payara ain't easy, it'll be a challenge keeping it and trying to comm it. Gonna check out my lfs for the payara. Sure hope it's a scomberoides.

yea dude go for Hydrolycus scomberoides, this fish kill ass...:naughty:

no matey... just lluv those Fangs... could do a tooth commercial with it:D

could definately do more than a tooth commercial, dats for sure.My payara is slightly blinded in 1 eye. Is there any cure for it?

do post ya problem at illness and health forum, there will be answer to ya question. salt and melafix and frequent WC.....

The lfs i bought the payara from feeds them goldfish. Could be another reason, though haven't heard of it. Tink i'll follow limz_777 method. Thanks.
