Hydrolycus Scomberoides

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My little guy (probably around 7-8" now) just broke randomly one day. I stopped putting feeders in his tank and he just had to learn. He's in the closest thing to a "community" tank I have at the moment. Everyone else in the tank eats shrimp and tilapia nightly, so he finally caved and joined the crowd. Teacher fish seem to be the key. He eats off the bottom 95% of the time. Every now and then he will be really hungry and catch a piece before it hits the bottom, but that's rare.

Totally agree with the Scomb being a severely unappreciated payara species. They may not be the monster show-stoppers Armatus are, but they're still a really unique, awesome fish.

Nice scomberoid love him! I had a nice one awhile back and got him to eat silver sides and freeze dried krill.
I had over a foot of fishing line at the end of my power head. I would tie a silver side on the end of the line and drop it in and be sneaky about it. Worked very well. I starved him for a long time before he would hit them.

At least it eats off the bottom. If my armatus doesn't snatch his food and it falls to the bottom, I have to scoop it up and keep trying.

The one in my avatar lived 2 years and reached 12" in length - never weaned and not do to effort. For 2 years it ate mollies from pet smart @ $1 a fish -10 fish a week.

That's one spoiled pet :)

although i am quite late to this discussion, i feel lucky. I purchased 4 scombs all 2-4 inches. i fed them live guppies for about 2 weeks. starved for about 5 days then dropped silverside in the stream of my circulation pump and one grabbed it as it shot across the tank. the next day another one of the 4 ate a silverside. after that it was game on. all for almost instantly started taking silverside one after another without any hesitation. they are all around 6inches now and are taking silverside, krill, and tilapia from my hand.

i loved my scomb! it learned how to eat dead from my hujeta gar, it also surprisingly ate massivore pellets from the floor which was intended for my bichirs.
