Hypostomus Plecostomus: The underappreciated Pleco.

Why are Hypostomus Plecostomus so underappreciated? Sure, they don't have the color of the fancies, but they are the most overworked species. Many ignorant fishkeepers keep them solely for their algae eating ability. They are undernourished, fed a poor diet, and kept in poor conditions. Let's give them a fancy name too. I propose we call them the "Brown Nugget Pleco". Not for their coloration, but for their unnatural ability to leave brown nuggets all over the substrate. Give the fish some credit.

I totally agree with you the name "common" is so demeaning and they are so underappreciated in our hobby because their not in vogue..I have to bite my lip when I read some of these threads.....I have 2 myself one a 13" -15" monster to be , that is so thick and coca dark. He glides around the tank like a big airplane. I can’t get a good pic of him as he is so dark...People when they come over are fascinated watching him, when I tell them he is a regular pleco they are amazed...

Let's hope we can erase the name " common" pleco from at least this forum that would be a good start.....

I just gave away my two for pooping up their palace. I give them a wonderful home, and that's the way they reward me . LOL

If JDMAN kept thirty of those in his 180, he would need Six AC110's and would have to do water changes once an hour. I don't think the "Brown Nugget" will become the next Clown Loach. LOL

LOL that is very true Maybe you could put 30 of them in a bathtub with the drain open and the faucet running
