Hypostomus Plecostomus: The underappreciated Pleco.

I don't think ichthyologists care much about common names. LOL

I'll second that, common names are so difficult to use. They can be one of any number of species. Latin names are the way to go.

are you kiddin me? latin names are near imposible to remember

glodius maximus plecomatrix all that nonsence

Latin names are not very difficult to remember. The first name of the pair is the genus, showing a broad area that the species belongs to. The second is the specific species. Common names may be easier to remember, but are useless if they can be one of 20 species, spanning numerous genus and even families.

I would prefer all fish were dually labeled at the store, but that would mean so much writing on the glass you couldn't see the fish.

Its not just the aforementioned... many "similar" looking ie largish brown plecs referred to as commons. They usually have the best personalities and are great fish. Unfortunately the downfall of these (and most other plecs) are the stupid conception that they are algae eaters, and so are therefore bought by thousands of lazy and ignorant/ mis-informed people that will lead to their demise. Who cares about a clean up crew fish... they are disposable...

My brown nugget pleco is the only creature I have ever seen that actually craps more than he eats. It just defies the laws of physics.

He's proud of it to, he always seems to drape his work over a piece of driftwood or something in a very visible place.

whatever their name, I'm never going to buy one. I've had a few common plecos in the past and they have all been tempermental, mean, pushy, and disruptive. on the other hand I've had a few sailfin(gibbiceps) plecos and they've been rather dither, not being pushy to the other fish.
maybe, though, there is a good common out there, somewhere, because they are beautiful fish.(in their own way.)

If only we could harness the power.
