Hystrix difficulties with feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the advise guys, impatience got the better of me, still, two out of four converted so far is good odds :)
Had been thinking today I'd isolate the two non converts and offer worms for afew weeks until they bulk up, then start introducing prawn and carnivore pellets together with worms

My male hystrix got addicted to worms! Only eats prawns now. He still won't take pellets despite me starving for up to two weeks! You are not the only person to give up.

Thanks for the support mate. I guess what added to the lack of perseverance and frustration was the fact that the massivore male took to pellets and prawn sooo easily compared to the others

Looking good Mike.

I'm not seeing any other fish in there? Try putting some Geophagus in or Satanoperca, or even a small shoal of Metynnis or Myleus. The reason I say this is that these types of fish have a gentle disposition and will feed on Hikari Cichlid gold sinking pellets. Over time this will in turn stimulate the Hystrix to take the pellets and other foods entering the tank, another "very" good reason for this is you can try alternative foods without the problem of having to siphon the leftovers out, wild caught's are easily spooked by foreign objects entering their environment.
Patience is the key Mike,It has taken me well over a year to get certain wild Hystrix to accept pelleted foods, I kept a female myself from this group, she is on Hikari carnivore, Mussel and chopped whitebait. Another guy from Stoke had 4 after you, he phoned me the other day to give me an update, all his are on pellets he said.

Some good tips from the other guys I might add.

Patience is the key! these special little rays are worth the effort.

All the best!

Good to hear from you Richard, thanks for the words of wisdom.
There are a few clown loach in the tank which certainly compete with the rays a bit but do stimulate the ray's inquisitive side when food is about. The ghost knife is present also which makes short work of massivore etc.

Interesting to hear it's taken you over a year with some WC hystrix, makes me realise I should just be happy they. All feed, regardless of what the food is at this early stage.
I'm not stressing entirely about them all not taking pellet, rather I would just find it easier if they were all off worms.. It'll come.

Appreciate the guidance from everyone, perked my enthusiasm 😃

Pleased to say I've gone back to feeding the non converts worms, didn't bother separating them, just feed the other two pellets/prawn first and then have the enjoyment of hand feeding the other two worms :) I'll fatten them up for a few weeks and start introducing marinated sampler foods to see how it goes.
