Hystrix Growth Rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
True, mine are slow growing. I bought my first pair in Dec 08 at around 3.5" each. I did lose the male a few months later, but the female is now about 5". I bought a second female in March '09 at about 6". She has grown very little since, so little that I can hardly notice a difference. My third hystrix is a male I bought in July '09 at around 6.5". He is now around 7", and I noticed his claspers have grown a bit in the past 2 months. Overall, they appear to be really slow growers. These are all wild caught too.

I feed mine about every day a diet of shrimp, squid, scallop, tilapia, and mysid shrimp. As keepinfish suggested, I think the pellets may accelerate growth.

was this the male or female that reached that size in 20 months?

i am thinking my male at a little over 2 years old roughly has stopped growing already. I dont see him ever breaking 10"

Well, your rays are WC so you can prob expect them to stay a bit smaller and grow slower.

CB males will normally get to around 12-13"(30-35 cm) and females 16" (40 cm).

My pair pretty much matured at the same time as far as I remember. I have never seen much diffrence in the growth rate of males and females in any of the rays I have kept. :)

I bought a female October last year.
In 11 months she has grown from 17 to almost 30 cm.

That is an amazing looking hystrix! What do you feed her?

She is a CB beauty, bought in Germany.

I feed her mussels, coalfish/pollack, shrimps, mysis, earth worms, bloodworms, and a homemade mixture of peas, spinach, shrimp, and spirulina -with added multivitamins.

Nice hystrix, I kept a female that look identical to that one. She was about 3 inches. She stopped eating a died on me. I will have to find a pic of her.
