hystrix owners-----or just ray owners...

Ha ha.... I was just questioning this yesterday.

I'm trying to figure out a way to lower the PH on a consistent/reliable basis. Don't want to mess with mixxing ro and tap water..... Don't see the point in filtering water then just taking 1/2 what you filtered out and putting it right back into the water again..... Thought maybe just a really fine sediment filter after a carbon filter in my water main might do it, but apparently it won't.

It seems about half my rays have these cloudy eyes as well....

Hardness I'm not sure on. PH around 8.

REALLY?? i do not have the problems with any of my other rays just my hystrix... after i keep them in captivity for about 1 month the cloudy eyes show up.. eat fine act fine but look blind...lol

Well, actually i noticed that my preg. female motoro's eyes are a little cloudy (nothing like my hystrix) i just thought that it was from stress of the third pregnancy....

what ever comes out of my tap LOL i actually have no idea anymore what it is...

if you dont mind tannins i used to let peat pellets soak in 55 gallons of water for a few days then mix it back with tap water...when adding it to the tank... i did this for a friend who has well water that im surprised you cant chew PH when mixed back was right around 7 +/- (down from 9.?) and GH and all was down... had to change water every 2 days to keep it stable... tricky pain in the asz but it worked

that is what DW recommended to me too

quoted from david
"If your pH is 7.8 then it implies the water is hard/full of minerals. the easiest way is to use r/o water in your water changes, cut 50-50 with regular aged tap, this wil redcue the minerals and the pH buffers so pH can drop organicly instead of forcing it. Also, you could add some peat moss in a stocking to our sump, it has good antibacterial and antiseptic properties, as well as helping the pH drop a little organicly, by ion exchange. "

ha ha....

here is the thing, a friend of mine has hystrix as well and his ph is also high 7.8-8 and he has had his hystrix as long as me...no cloudy eyes. but have not checked the hardness yet. the only difference he has city water i have well water? more minerals in well water i would assume...right?

my friend would/does run carbon for a day to remove some of the tannins when you leave peat in the water for a few days black is not the word to describe it...
