Hystrix ray question ....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had the Goliaths for just over 2 years and got them at about 4-5 inches .... they hit a nice growth spurt when I got that tank up and running, plus I got them eating pellets during the switch which really helped their growth as well ... sucks not being able to get the fish you want!!! I looked for an NGT DAT for almost a year, until I finally got 1 and he won't eat pellets! So he isn't growing much and would be goonch food if I put him in that tank! I really am falling in love with the rays .... I def want more! Its an addiction, and I'm addicted! Gonna need more tanks though lol ... just gotta hit the lotto and I'll be set! Haha

If I'm not mistaken your female Hystrix could be gravid, looks big in all the right areas, check for movement when she is still.
Stunning collection of predatory fish by the way.

I do believe she is as well :D haven't seen definite movement yet, hard to tell whether its her big butt jiggling or pup, but aside from that her back end is getting taller and taller so I'm pretty sure .... I've got a 40 gallon breeder, and the required equipment to plumb it into the big tanks system for the pups, problem is I will have to be there when she gives birth cause I guarantee the goonches will go after the pups almost immediately ... I will be watching very closely! Thanks guys

Thanks!
I agree, best case scenario would be a divider, but I can't do that to my ATF's Dorado and Armatus .... especially the ATF's they use every inch of the tank, and while the Dorado is more of a calm swimmer, the ATF's will absolutely smash themselves against the divider trying to get around it .... granted they have proven time and time again they have amazing healing qualities, I just can't risk it at this point .... luckily I work early in the morning and generally am home by 1 and my fiance only works 3 days a week 13 hour shifts so between the 2 of us hopefully we'll catch her in the act and take the necessary action to keep the goonches away while they are moved .... that's about the best I can do unfortunately, and I've read up on the pre-birthing signs so hopefully I'll have a decent idea of when its gonna happen

Well, just completed 1 of my bi-weekly water changes and usually the rays burrow in the sand while I do this .... this allowed me to closely watch the females expected baby bump while she was motionless and I def did notice some movement in there so I'm pretty much positive babies are on the way eventually! Awesome! I think this weekend I'll get the 40 plumbed into the big tank's filter and water supply, with a little sand in it so I'm ready .... was thinking to wait to save on the electric, but since the only added draw is the return pump I don't think it will make a big difference and the ends justify the means

If you want to save the pup(s), you better find a way to separate the ray from the other fishes.
