I have some confusion regarding hystrix rays , could some one please help me clear things up.

i've always thought hystrix rays are rays with no dots or pattern, this is the type of rays that most of the lfs in my area carry, and they're much cheaper than a motoro ray. Then i came acrross some post of hystrix ray in the sell and buy forum and these rays are around $500 each.
am i missing something here?
thanks

The ones in your area are no TRUE P. cf hystrix. They are a cheap brown ray out of Peru, usually P. humerosa/orb or motoro variant.

The ones in the B/S are captive bred P. cf hystrix. P. cf hystrix are only found in Brazil and with the lifting of the ban w/c specimens are just now becoming available but dont expect to see them at your LFS anytime soon.

The TRUE TRUE P. hystrix come from Argentina and Paraguay and I have never seen one imported to the US, but a little bird told me he is working on it! :grinno:

turkeyboy - the exporters still call many of the small unidentified brown rays out of Peru histrix, so it's not really the LFS's fault for not knowing any different.
