Hey I'm new to stingrays and was about to purchase a 4" Hystrix ray and I wanted to know if my dorado would be a good tankmate. My dorado is about 7"s and the tank would be a 300 gallon 8x24x30. Would this be ok and how many Hystrix rays could I purchase. Please help thanks

i have no experience with dorado, but since they are larger and more powerful fish, I would possibly try and get a larger hystrix

In the beginning there is no tankmates that are suitable..When you buy a new ray, they should be all alone till you got them very fat and healty + eating what you want them to eat on a regular basis. When that is done, there could be added tankmates..btw, dorados get frikking huge?:)

I echo what Tor-Eriik says, let them get established before you go putting tank mates in.
Dorado,Mmmm ! there are much better choices, these fish are quite aggressive towards many other midwater tank mates and like already mentioned grow huge not to mention very avtive,a much bigger tank than yours would be needed in the future.
Hystrix being one of the smaller more managable species can be kept in a tank like yours for life, tank mates for me would include Geophagus,Satanoperca,Hero's sp,disc characins are good too,Metynnis sp,Myleus sp and mylossoma, and if you like your predatory fish there's south American spotted Gar Boloungerella maculata(spelling) B.latistriga.All these fish make good tank mates for smaller rays but of course they all need to be added at sizes that are compatible, the Gars mentioned do make large fish in the wild but over a 40 year period of keeping oddball fish i have never seen any of the these Gars mentioned grow larger than 12" or so in captivity.
This would make for a nice peaceful community, very Amazonian! Many of the fish mentioned are often kept by Ray enthusiasts only to be molested and killed by the ray at a later date, because Hystrix and Scobina remain quite small these choices should cohabit for many years to come.
Good luck!

Allow our ray to get to feeding well 1st. Then allow for it to get sumsize. If you can I would suggest species onl with some small dither fish like tetras.

Wow thanks for the valuable info. Also how many rays could fit in my 300 gal. I have a 400 gallon and I will move my dorado this week. I really want a pair of Hystrix. However do not know how to sex them at 4"s. I will look into tank mates later but I like the ones you suggested

Rapps has hystrix pairs for 575 a pair I believe. They are confirmed breeding pairs. I would personally put a group of Florida Gars with them... I have Florida gars and they would make an impressive display with a mating pair of sting rays.

Happy Holidays, Ryan.

Rays can be sexed at any size. Males have 2 claspers underneath by their tail and females do not.
