Hystrix...you just have to love em!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's strange that so many people over look the hystrix, I can easily say they are my favs, I sold my blacks and pearls just to concentrate on having only hystrix, you have a fantastic collection, I'm finding it really hard to track down good size hystrix in UK

Thanks doyboy!
Hystrix are like you say very hard to come by. I too sold off my black rays before the ban a few years ago, in fact about 2 weeks before the ban.....what a sickener!! but kept both my Marbles and Hystrix, I will never regret retaining the brownies, Hystrix for me have the best shape of any ray and the way these stocky rays move about the tank is a sight to behold, I have said it before and I will say it again, unless you have kept this species its hard for you to comprehend what I am saying.

Very nice. How big of a tank are your breeders in? How many of each sex do you have in the tank?
Thanks!
One tank is 108"L x 24"H x 30" wide, in there is 3 females and 2 males, the other tank is 60" x 24" x 36", this one houses a trio, this is my best tank regarding breeding in the short term as the fish are a good size.
I first bred my Hysrix pair in a 72" x 24W x 20" H, they bred several times for me though I recommend 30" front to back min for anyone wanting to keep and breed the species.

Great hystrix group. How many do you have?

8 in total Jason.
Thank you!

I have seen these first hand and they look even better!

Sam Buckle said recently that hystrix seem to have more character than other rays, you can watch the, hunt and pounce.....the adult size is good for tank life too.
