Chances are your RTC's colors will turn out perfectly normal as for the Gill curl, the best cure is clean water and if your RTC will allow it without adding much stress then you can massage it back into place.
My RTC definitely would not allow me to masage him ... he has gill curl but does not seem to affect him ..... this is the murderous RTC that tend to eat everybody (the one without curl is quite chill)
When your able to hand feed them they tend to be really cool about being touched and seem to actually enjoy it, in your situation with the gars... I doubt that I would be reaching to far into the tank eitherctoychik;2746649; said:

RTCs do come for handfeeding, but never stay long enough to be patted or whatever. Basically, comes up the side then gropes my hand until all prawn is taken then just violently pulls away ...
you are right about the gars, they start circle if i put my hand into the tank, though i have patted the biggest gar before, sometimes he does not care and sometimes he swims away. My gars are not skittish (tank goodness)
