hey guys i just joined the club too. thanks to dragon hunter for the deal.

i searched about how the water flows through the canister and i thought it was inlet, bottom, top, outlet.
but when i opened it up im more confused than ever, it seems that both the outlet and inlet go through pipes that go to the bottom, can anyone clear this up for me?

does it go from inlet, outer basket area, bottom, through the basket from bottom to top, then outlet? doesnt seem like flow like that is possible when i look at the insides, i want my fx5 to be a most mechanical filtration as possible since my sump takes care of all the bio load.

what should i put in the trays and outer canister area to achieve this?

Yes they are awesome, I have 2 of the fx5's, I run white Hagen Fluval Prefilter Media (Fluval A-1470) in top basket, carbon in bags in middle basket when needed, and Hagen Fluval Bio Max Media 500 grams (Fluval A-1456) in bottom basket, I recently put a blue pad on top of lower basket but I have found that they tend to get clogged and restrict flow after awhile. When I notice my filter spitting out air bubbles it is time to change pad. I have a 36 watt power twist uv sterilizer after the filter before I put water into tank, helps with ick when adding new fish. I will run it for 2-3 days 2 X a week for 2 weeks. THen no need for it and saves bulb life.

sorry just noticed last post, water runs from top basket thru to bottom of basket in center

+1, If you read the manual there is a nice little bit on which media should go where as well

So Sunday a guy calls up asking questions about filtration on a 150gallon. The set up he was working with was a CL find and came with a fx5. He was very upset the fx5 wasn't working for him so I told him to take it apart and sell the parts on eBay or fix it. I also recommend to replace it because that is a great filter and I was interested parts myself.
So the guy comes to me with not one but two fx5, Rena, and a box of parts. After haggling for a few we settled for $65 and now I have a little work ahead of me but one looks savable and no idea where I stand with the Rena.
I think i struck a good deal even know I may just have a bunch of fx parts and out $65.
