I am addicted, and there ain't no cure!!! Anyone else like me?

To filtration. I am completely and honestly addicted. Look, I over filter. I do it because its good for my fish and it's good for my soul. I'm not going to hide it.

I've mentioned this before, but I absolutely love the mechanics of filtration as much as I love the fish. In fact, I'd extend that to the tank and the stand. There is just something so base and primitively stirring about mechanicals, that really gets me going.

I'm the same way about cars. I like clean exteriors, with crazy engines under the hood.

I've mentioned before that a pin up calendar with lovely ladies holding canisters would be on my wall faster than you can say crickets.

When I see a display tank in a store or a lobby, I want to see what drives it, almost more than the tank itself.

I remember watching this television special on an Aquarium, I think it was in Georgia, but I can't be sure. Maybe it was the Shedd? In any event, they went behind the scenes to show the mechanics and filtration. Needless to say I pooped my pants right then and there. Needless to say my wife was furious. I've learned to not view such programs, or eheim or fluval brochures whilst clothed, or if clothed, in plastic pants..

Anyone else like me?

how come you haven't taken your passion to the next level and built your own filtration/sumps? or have you? share some projects?

I built my own canister/trickle filter in 1988. It consisted of a bucket with a pond pump in the bottom. Full o' bio balls and foam. I remember having different variations on force fed intake to gravity through a custom surface skimmer. I miss living in my parents house where I could leak saltwater on the floor and rust the doorknobs in every room in the basement. :)

I also built a custom multi chambered sump back in 87. That this is still in my garage collecting creatures who aren't able to make it out of the water flow channels!

Today I stick to turn key systems. :)

Lol, I just like enought filtration to keep my tank clean and healthy, which is always overfiltration but I don't get excited like you. I agree with ballinouttacntrol why not mess around more with DYI filtration and maybe try and come up with something that's never been done something unique.

When I read what you wrote about being more interested in what drives tanks than the tanks themselves, I had to smile. My wife is always just a little embarrassed when I open up the cabinet under display tanks in stores and restaurants...

I also love the mechanics of filtration. A well-made filter is a thing of beauty, but I am more into the built-from-scratch DIY stuff. Somebody recently said my setup looks like some sort of Mad Scientist's project - my greatest compliment to date. :D

That's funny! I do the same thing in restaurants. My wife also hates it.
