Most bags of shipped fish the ph can get very low ,ive seen the bags at 5.0 and lower.Amonia is less toxic in a lower ph and the affects of amonia will take alot longer to affect the ray,PH shock can do more damage to a ray long term than short term.
Thats why you remove most of the bags water and keep just enough to cover the ray,use a fast drip line {do not crimp it,and let it flow open}with in 15 min you have replaced most of the water in the acclimating container with the tank water, then remove it to just above the ray again and let it flow for another 15 min.
And good to go,no need for detoxifiers or salt or stress coat.Net the ray and put in ,and he will be relaxed and ready to eat very quickly.
I have used this method for the last 17 yrs on everything from Cardinal tetra's to Discus and even salt water fish, with out any problems.

this is the best way IMO

i may try this way with my motoros that i will be getting very soon...the drip i did before on my first retics was longer (about 4hrs)...do you just use and air line for this drip?

i havent hed much experience myself but in doing my research cuz i am getting 2 rays on tuesday it seems it is mostly preference because i have spoken with breeders and read books and articles and what not and no one can really say which is better and why its just what ever they feel more comfortable with i was told by the person i am getting mine from just to dump some tank water in every ten minutes for an hour and that would be just fine,

its the PH thats the big issue

if you have a big difference in PH drip if not just dump them in

my method has always been take 2 pans of water put it in to the polybox leave for 10 mins then take the ray out of the polybox and put it straight in the tank

i never transport rays in bags just directly in the polybox if you are moving the rays yourself if they are being shipped by a 3rd party the in bags they go

the drip method is a waste of time you want to get the rays in the new tank asap

its only the PH you need to worry about as the water in your tank should be better than in the box

never had any problems

my ph is 7.2...the drip we are talking about is an acellerated drip of 30 min....i have tried the 4hr drip with no luck...and the dump with ok reasults...seems alot are torn on their prefurence.

off topic but....how does everyone move their rays from tank to tank? i had a hell of a time moving my retics to the 180 last night...would a net be the best way...i brushed a stinger in the process...not a penatrating wond, but it still was irritated and tingly...like posin ivy...i would like to not do that again, it was to close for my likeing...

I've only moved my one ray once, in an attempt to take the airline tubing off. All I did was use a tote when the water level was low. Placed it in the bottom, and then slowly pushed/guided the ray into it. The tote is heavy when you're lifting it out of the water, but you tilt it and remove most of the water to make it lighter.

I've read not to use a net, because the stinger has reverse barbs on it and can catch on a net.

ok...my net is way to small and the tails were outside the net the whole time...i didn't want to have to untangle a stinger...

Just use a container or bag next time. Theres really no reason to use a net unless your ray is adult sized.

i put them into a bag then moved them to the other tank...i just couldn't get the bag to work for me so i used my last option at the time....i may use a kool-aid pitcher to move my motoros from the qt tank after i get them...that worked well for my 20" tsns...
