I am going to try again.

Ok so after a lot of reading, thinking and research I have decided I'm going to go with a smaller tank and only a few fish (the ones I really want). So first the tank. Here is a picture I put this in the wall a month ago and haven't been able to decide what to put in it. The africans I reall want are a black calvus and a pair of brichardi. I'm going to put a leulpi in there to fill my wifes need to have some bright color since its a display tank.

I am going to take the sand out and replace it with ?crushed coral?. And I'm going to do a little more then half of the tank in rocks all the way to the top. This tank is a 29 gallon and its filtered by a aq 70 so its got plenty of filtration. And there will be plenty of structures in the tank.

I was still wanting to do shell dwellers but I don't think I could in this small of a tank. Pretty sure I am maxed out as far as space goes. When I was thinking of what tank to go with I considerd a lot of options everything from my 90 and 72 bowfront to this tank. And decided on this one because I really only wanted a pair of brichardi and a black calvus. I'm trying to convince my wife that the tank will be "pretty". She says it won't with only one bright fish. Any comments, suggestions or ideas. What do you guys think? Does this sound good. If my wife isent pleased is there another fish I can put in there to make it more "pretty"? Thanks for looking.

Yeah but I was advised to use a natural way to buff my water since it comes from my tap at 7.0. I probably been unsuccesful in the past because I tried to hard to get the ph dead on by useing chemicals. I was told earlier in this thread to go a more natural way. I thought crushed coral was coomonly used to buffer the water. As far as rock goes I think we have a collection spot around here for lace rock I don't know if this type of rock has any buffering properties so I was turning to the substrate. Is there something else that will bring my ph up that I can use for substrate?

And does anyone have any suggestions to another "pretty" fish I can put in with the calvus, brichardi pair, and leleupi or am I allready at my stock load max? Hopefully my wife will like the calvus and brichardis a lot and relize that the tank dosent need a bunch of color to look great. But as I mentioned she saw pics of the fish and was like black, white, and grey that seems a little drab that's why the leleupi is going in there, to add some color. Thanks for reading.

Stable is key with ph... most of the fish you will buy comes from your LFS, which uses the same tap water. I would worry about keeping it stable...(what chem can not do) You will have just as much luck this way. They also make agronite which is about the size of pool filter sand... Looks great!

Agronite. Will look into it. The shop I go to is like 45 minutes away. Diffrent county, diffrent water. But isince I started my reef I have done a drip aclimation that takes about an hour so I'm sure everything is fine. 7.0 is ok for tanganyikans? I used peat filtering when keeping discus so limestone and this agronite is just to take the water the other way. Alright this should be cool.

Fish suggestions? Or should I leave it be?

I use sugar fine aragonite and pool filter sand in all my tanks, except fry tanks. Be REAL careful once that pair of brichardi start spawning. They will harass and kill fish and calvus are not too motivated when it comes to defending themselves. If I were you I'd scrap the brichardi and go with the calvus and the shell dwellers you had mentioned. Brichardi may not get big but they can be some of the meanest fish out there once they begin to spawn...and they will. They're like convicts: will spawn anywhere, in anything.

Maybee just one brichardi then, I really like them. I do recall reading they breed like convicts but I had no idea they were so aggresive. I will have to do some more reading. Thanks for the substrate tip.

I'll tune in a bit late here, but at least throw in my $0.02. I do not do anything with my water other than filter the chlorine/chloramines out of it and heat it. I just keep the water parameters consistent and clean.

Glad to hear you're giving Africans another shot.

So no suggestions on another tang cichlid that stay smaller then 5 inches and would work in place of that second brichardi?
