i am looking for info...sengal birchir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
@BTK....I've had a senegal for about a year now, he was about 9 inches long when i bought him and hasn't grown since, but he eats a ton!! i feed him jumbo shrimp and sinking pellets which he readily takes sometimes right out of my hand. He has a great temperment and doesn't attack anything in the tank. As other have said don't keep him in the tank with anything that can fit in his mouth because he will definitelty eat it...oh yea and keep the lid on tight i've heard they're great escape artists.

I read the stickies there about history, types, health...did not have the answers I needed...I ask nicely but when peolpe talk smack I talk it back.....
James u have 2 people who care..I guess that means Ur a expert LOL
This is the reason mfk gets a bad wrap.....cuz dummies/so called experts like to talk smack

they grow pretty fast and they are usually not aggressive towards fish big enough to be not considered prey.

As for tankmates, i heared carcharhinus leucas make great tankmates.

My senegal bichirs :
Growth-grew pretty quickly to about about7 then slowled down and are slowly fattening nicely.
Temperment-very mellow fish. Does well in groups or as a single specimen. Will eat other fish no matter how fast they are that can fit in their mouths. They hunt at night while others sleep.
Diet- I feed mine good quality sinking carnivore pellets, live gut loaded shrimp, occasional feeder fish, veg pellets.
Tankmates- I have kept mine with African cichlids, knifefish, dat, angelfish, tinfoils, silver dollars and currently with 7" jag cichlid and 6" GT (they are not harrased by my cichlids as they see them as no threat).

I hope this helps although I must take the side of those advising you to do research and read. We all did it.

Thanks for the info...one more question...if u keep it with a JAG and green terror why would I not be able to keep with my FH...its just as aggressive as a JAG and gt

You shouldn´t keep him with any aggressive cichlids. Look, i don´t know what you want? Do you want the best for your pets or just put as much species into a tank as possible? Your senegal couldn´t even defend itself... So try to explain me your intentions behind that, because i don´t understand it.

It's not that you can't, it is just a risky move. My tank with jag and GT have a lot of other stimuli to preoccupy the more aggressive cichlids, these cichlids are still young and things cold change. I keep a close eye on them.

I have an opportunity to buy 2 sengal birchirs about 2.5"-3"
I read a lil about the fish but would like to kno a few things
1 max size and growth rate
2 typical temperment(Wat size do they get aggressive)
3 tankmates
4 diet
If I buy them they would be put in a community tank 130g...with four 3.5"-4.5" rose queens....four small 1" flowerhorns...and 1 pleco unknown type...
I do plan on selling a few of those fish just growing them out in there for now....
So do u think I could make it work?
I do plan to only keeping one male FH and one female FH in the 130 and upgrading to a 240 for my aggressive community tank would they be cool in there?
the max size of senegalus maybe 30cm
it's carnivore he eat what can fit ini his mouth, you can feed him guppy, catfish, ghost shrimp, earthworm (fit with his mouth)
i think this fish can be keeped with larger fish(not fit with its mouth) like gar, black ghost
