to run your own business nothing is really required (its your show), but experience in retail sure helps, and having good customer relations, and managment experience is a plus, but if really worried about school, depending on the aspects, Business Management, Financing, etc are great way to learn the most about running a place of business...
As far as owning/running your own place goes, location is key, especially today with competitors usually popping up all over the place, but like any business no matter the size its a gamble, and the first year is usually really tough, but after that if you can struggle through it rest should be a breeze. I have some family members who owned and ran their own store of various sorts, and I am currently at the management level in my life, and have worked with various retail stores, as well as the private sector. There is only one way to find out if you can do it though (1 I hope to find out myself someday soon as well) TRY IT... you can't make it if you don;t, and you won't know unless you do.... is the risk worth it to you?
thanks for the info, im gong for it, i just need to strat saving up:grinyes:

If you get it rocking I'll be a knockin'

if you are will ship to the UK, cause other than the community seller on here (dan), its pretty rotten choice where i am!!!!

my dream since ive been about 8 (im 14 now) was to open a pet store with a friend. now i know who i want to open it with. im taking 3 business classes in high school so i can be good at running a business and construction technologies for construction of cages, hides, etc. i want a petshop that sells everything but i dont want to have a shop that everyone talks about how dirty they are. but good luck i wish you the best.

yea like has been stated, education isnt a must, and is more a customer relations thing, and of course getting the suppliers. the only hard bit in it (starting) is getting the revenue to back it. if you dont have any money or a car and home to back it with, your not going to get anyway with a bank, and some business trusts definately wont be able to back the amount of money you need. so in that case you need private investors (yourselves or otherwise). hopefully i'll be seeing how possible it is in the UK soon.
