~ I know this sounds dumb but what do you guys do about the algae in your tank? do you scub the your tank twice a week or use a water treatment? My fish are sweet and I love looking at them but hate all the green goo.. Just venting a little. Thanks.

Is your tank directly in the sunlight or are you using actinic lights or anything like that? When I had algae problems as a kid, my dad got three plecos and they cleared it up within two weeks.

ya plecos are good, Ive never had algae problems in fresh or salt water tanks

I hear you, on two of my tanks it's no big deal, just scrub the sides once a week or so, I never got the big deal...still I started this dang 5g planted, huge clumps of algae inside two days after cleaning, and in places I can't scrub...I'm thinking of *shhh* trying a water treatment...

I've never had one bit of algae in my non-planted tanks. Sometimes I wish it would grow. What's your lighting, and how many hours?

Cheap compact florecent bulb in a cheap hood, I turn it on when I get up in the morning, and off when I go to lay down...about 16 hours or so.

Try only turning it on when you are viewing the tank. Leave it off the rest of the time.

That could be a problem. Cut it down by a 1/3. A cheap timer comes in handy. My lights are on for an hour in the morning, then 5-11pm while I'm home.

run a good UV and you can have the light on all day long :))
That will only treat green water, algae cells floating in the water. It won't do anything for algae that is growing on surfaces.
