So every one says no rays in my 30" but then I see scobina, retic, hystrix are well less than 30" disc size. So why is it every one says no 30" tanks? Is it just because these rays are so rare that they are almost impossible to get true ones? and then you end up with a large ray you can't house.

Ummmm would you put a 20 inch fish in a 30 inch tank? Im not sure wht u r saying

Are you talking about a 30" wide tank? If so you can keep any species of ray you want just some of them will not be for life. You could house most rays for 3 plus years if the tank was long enough and the water volume and filtration could handle the rays in the tank.

keep in mind that a 30" disk doesn't count the tail which can add a lot of inches. Retics in particular will have very long tails.

Scobina are very hard to find. A hystrix would probably be the best fit for that tank IMO. You will know if and when your tank is too small for the ray

So could I keep a single hystrix or scobina if I can find one? How can I tell if its a true hystrix? I am a long way out from setting up the tank, just trying to understand, what would keep me from keeping one. Also if I could keep a hystrix is there any mfk'er who breads so I would know I got a real one.

You could keep a male of most species for life in a tank that size and a select few females. A trio of scobina, hystrix, or rectics no problem. Chances of your rectic keeping a full tail for life would be slim unless it was alone.

Scobinas are over $1000. Only seen like 2 available in the US and the last one is still available last I heard for $1500. So likely count them out, unless you can justify that kinda $ on your first ray.
