I have a good deal of rocks in my NA Native tank, but they seem kind of bare, and not natural. I want to encourage some algae growth on them. Any idea how to get this to work? Tank is unheated and only has a low power light. Should I increase the lighting? I don't want to increase the temp, as Pumpkinseeds don't like high temperatures.

Put the tank in front of a window, get rid of plecos/ alge eaters.

And you can throw some plant feeder in there.

dont do water changes and up the light as much as you can and get some good uv bulbs

Moving the tank is not an option and since it is a native tank I don't have pleco's or algae eaters. I will try the plant food, and look into getting a stronger light.

You can do water changes just make sure you put some plant food in the water, use some fertilizer tablets and place them by the rocks

no need to add fertilizer, fish make plenty on their own. just run some bright 5000k-6500k lighting and it will come. personally, I'd go find an algae covered rock that you like the look of and snitch some of that algae. just a little bit shredded up into the water column should start you out as long as you have the light to support it.

I love that nice green algae carpet. Never been able to grow it in any of my non-planted tanks though. Best thing I get is the ugly brown stuff :(
