I am weird and I want to encourage algae, need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I get it on my driftwood. Never fails. And I like it. Seems to keep the Nitrates down, and looks cool. I actually get compliments on it.

I use lighting that is conducive to plant growth, though. And I leave my lighting on for 15 hours a day.

And I don't keep plecos or algae eaters in the tanks where I want it to grow.

It seems like with ever tank, the brown diatom algae comes first, and then the green stringy algae kills it off and is there indefinitely unless removed.

Also, don't use a UV sterilizer if you want algae to grow.

If you were close to me, you could have some. It'd spread if you put it on some rocks in your tank.

why don't you just take out the rocks and put them in a bucket in the sun or something like that? algae will grow on them then put em back into ur tank and bam, it should keep growing and spread right?

Algae is a plant so it loves light.
So i would get more powerful lights or put the tank by a window.
You can also buy aquarium fertilizer which is meant for aquarium plants.
One more thing is a co2 producer, they are quite expensive but they are worth it for a planted tank.

p.s Some driftwood, plants, river rock and algae would look great in a coldwater/native planted tank

I've always liked algae, especially the grassy type that seems to wave at you from in the tank.It really looks nice on rocks and on the branches of driftwood......unfortunately,I have never had it in my tanks.

I'm not sure if this would fit into a native tank, but you could always get a couple small pieces of javamoss and attach them to the rocks or driftwood. It will eventually cover them. Other than that add more light with bulbs around the 6500k rating, increase the time your lights are on, and add plant food.
