i am now the proud owner of a baby arowana. traded in my two turtles (which iwas pretty gutted about) for a silver. he's about 3 inch and very lively. he has eaten a cube of bloodworm and is in my 15g nursery tank. im in the process of cleaning the turtles 65g tank which will be the new home of the arrow and his two baby jaguar cichid tankmates.

the plan is to grow them up in the 65g then they can have my 220 pacu tank and the pacu can get their own monsterous tank. its exciting times.

i owned an arowana till about a year ago. had him for a year and he died under mysterious circumstances. one day he was alive and well next day he was doing rolls in the water and had a cloudy eye. within minutes of me noticing he was dead. no other fish were ill or showed distress??

are there any tips on arowanas that i may not have considered?

My cichlids picked on my baby arowana and stressed him out to death.I would be very careful of pairing them up in your tank.

pic?

My baby silver aro died on my during winter black out. Water went from 82 to like 70 in 4 hrs.

I would be really careful with jags. but you are an experienced guy, just putting my 2 pence worth in. really good luck with your new arowana. i would say keep him hot, lots of water changes, lots of different food items. what were you worried you might not have covered?

all the best with him ( exciting times indeed)

Guy

baby aros should be alone and few exceptions to the rule...cichlids are the worst possible thing you can have witha a 3" silver aro...

just had a good look at him and he's about 4 and a half inch. wow thats a bit of a miscalculation, the baby jags are about an inch. at the moment (and i know things could change when they grow) the arowana swims around and the jags do what they always do...... hide. they are scared of their own shadow. everybody is eating well. arrow just had some muscle.

the fear is, are they more susceptible to poor water conditions?? thats the only thing i can think of why the other one died....... although no other fish were affected?!?!

also one eye was cloudy, but looked like it could have been burns, ie from the heater!?!? without an explaination i feel im cluching at straws.

who what or why it happened, i dont want anything like that happening again

Arowana should be kept without tankmates until 5-6" and not mixed with cichlids until the aro is 10-11" long and twice the length of the cichlids.

Personally I would not raise an aro in any less then 40 gallons of water. Baby aro are very sensitive to fluctuation in water params.
