I bought a Betta...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know its "only" a beta but why not give him a proper home with filtration and heater? I have my daughter's beta solo in a planted 10 gallon with a penguin 20 biowheel. He does well with the flow and actually seems to enjoy the current and when he wants to rest he just rests in a water wisteria clump.

Why not give him a "proper" home? what is that supposed to mean?

This is not a thread about how bettas should be kept, and my thread isn't open for that debate either.

It's cool that you have your betta in a different type of tank, but I will chose to keep him in this for now.

The water just tested at 76F- so no heater needed, and I can easily just do a water change on the tank. No harm, no foul imo.

I've heard many many people here say that their bettas do not like the current, and have not heard many say they do.. so, I'm going to go with the theory that they aren't crazy about it.

I do plan on adding live plants to this, this is only temporary.

Bettas are awesome mini monsters. My upstairs office tank has a crown tail that resides in a 2.5g with an Azoo palm filter and Hydor 7.5w mini heater. He avoids swimming on the side of the tank with current from the filter. I love his little dance he does when he sees me, almost as personable as my Midas.

I've heard lots of thing about bettas, not many really add up.

I guess a goldfish bowl is less inappropriate than tiny death bowl or cup. Also last I checked this is a discussion forum. If you are only looking for kudos then here you go, kudos on the setup.

Im not looking for kudos, but I'm not looking for know it alls either.

What he's being housed in, is perfectly fine. Don't tell me he needs a "proper" home.

The only "proper" home for any fish is in the wild where it belongs.

beware the Betta "drowning" with plant filtration, I have lost a couple of them getting tangled in the roots. One in a 1g at work, no filter. The other in a 10g tank...he might of died going after a few of the guppy fry that were in there.

Well said.

I too keep siamese fighters in unfiltered setups, I just make sure their tanks are appropriately sized and I do regular water changes. I had one in a bowl just like yours for almost 4 years when I was a kid. It survived really cold water, being dropped once, having no plants only a rock, and a host of other mistakes. I was 8, what do you expect? :D He really was a fighter though, survived all my mishaps and still greeted me every day.

The bowl he is in hold a gallon and a half. I found a 6.6 gallon shelf tank that I think I am going to look into for him.
