I wanted an extra tall stand for a 40 breeder (36x18x16) and I think I overdid it. I built it 36" tall, and now I'm concerned about the stability. I put it in place, partially filled it, did a preliminary levelling, filled it completely and let it sit overnight, and did the final levelling. The bottom is a solid piece of plywood. It's sitting on carpet, along an exterior wall, and perpendicular to the floor joists. I noticed motion in the surface of the water (filter turned off) when I walk within 5 feet of it, particularly in front, which would be the area along the joists between the exterior wall and the support beam. And I can definitely move it if I shove it hard enough. The 40 breeder is a pretty low and wide shape, but I'm afraid it's still too topheavy. Am I just being paranoid, or do I need to do something about it? My ideas are to cut up a square of carpet so the stand is sitting right on the subfloor, hopefully adding some stability. I really don't wanna destroy my carpet though, and I'm not even sure that would help. Or, I could shoot some screws through the plywood bottom, through the carpet, and into the subfloor, hitting the joists if I'm lucky. Any suggestions, ideas, or experiences with sketchy tall stands? Thanks.

Why dont you fasten it to the wall some how. Use a couple brackets just to stop it from moving or ever possibly tipping.

Its probably fine the way it is. But thats what I would do if it were me.

There is always the chance of it tipping over and the carpet doesn't help.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a 125 on a 2x4 stand that was 50" high, maybe even a little taller.

Same here

I have a 2x4 rack with the top 2 55g's setting on top of the 55" rack. So the top of the tank is 75" from the ground and about 6-8" from the ceiling.

lol , just dont lean on it. My stand are 36" but its 240gallons of water to keep it in place.

But 40 gallons of water is still alot of weight

The stand looks good to me.

You might be better off taking the bounce out of the floor boards.

The tiers (footings) rise and fall with time and moisture, they might need repacking.

Well despite your concerns with the stand, it looks awesome!

You have two problems.
1. you have no frame for the tank to sit on which is really causing that tank to shake build a frame colored in blue.

2. you have a box but you lack the structure to keep it stable adding the cross braces (Black) will be the quick fix but you should some kind of 2x at all your seams.

Hope this helps.
