I can’t believe this article I just read

I could def see people thinking... "if a pet shop owner was ok with that thing in a 75gallon for 40 plus years than we should do it too"... but who knows maybe it isnt real? How would a 75 stay together with that monster in it? ?‍♂️
Guess the tank holding up speaks to the workmanship products back then and perhaps a modern made tank spring a leak at at some point.

Maybe he froze the feeders first! Then they would be dead and parasites and such would be dead also. Then he could just throw them in the old pacu’s face without him banging around?

Feeding starts 49 sec timeframe

My question is how did the pet store owner think it was ok to feed it goldfish? Even if there was no information when he started that fish lived for four decades, in that time there is no excuse for him to not do research about the fish and find out he is not suppose to eat goldfish then change his diet.

He is a pet store owner, how did he stay in business with this? I would imagine that a fishkeeper worth his tanks would avoid that place on moral grounds alone.

i call b.s. .. opinions will vary .. probably a publicity stunt...

I have definitely read about this article and it drives me nuts for all the same reasons mentioned. I think the reason it was able to be in such a small prison cell for so long is because it was severely stunted at a young age. It obviously didn’t get enough of the proper nutrients needed to grow big. But it got just enough nutrients to survive.

Imagine being in a small prison cell for 43 years and being fed nothing but McDonald’s chicken nuggets. Ya it’s great at first, but then you realize it’s making you fat and super constipated. Your hungry af and that’s all you are being fed of course you will eat it. Then someone puts a salad in front of you after all that time, nah I want my nuggets.

like I always say, if you only poop once a week, you only clog the toilet once, right?

Butkiss the Pacu threads has been repeated Mfk over the years. I don’t agree with the long term living conditions. But I do believe the legitimacy of how old it may have been. Sadly, this pacu has been at that same fish store for many years. Which old time customers and their families can validate. Here’s a little interview from pawnation (website no longer around).

“In 1968, Buttkiss was sold to a man named Kurt Emerick. At the time, the fish was only about two inches long but soon grew to be much bigger and became very aggressive. Emerick wasn't so psyched when the Paco started knocking things over in his fish tank, so he returned him to the pet shop, where Gruebel named him after linebacker Dick Butkus. (Gruebel likes to spell it Buttkiss.)

“Gruebel has been working at the Cameo Pet Shop in Queens, New York for 47 years. He now owns the shop that originally belonged to his wife's father, and Buttkiss has been there pretty much since the beginning. "He's my mascot," Gruebel tells Paw Nation.

Buttkiss even does tricks. He comes to Gruebel's hand because he knows that's where the grub comes from. (Okay, so maybe it's not the most impressive trick, but the fish is elderly! Cut him a break!) When asked if Butkiss bites, Gruebel laughs, "Well, I stick my hand in there all the time to clean the cage and he just goes and lays in the corner."

Asked if Gruebel has done anything special to keep Buttkiss around so long, Gruebel says, "No, just feed him 20 goldfish every day, every other day depending." So why has Buttkiss lived so long? Gruebel shrugs, "I don't know." And the mysteries of longevity continue...

20 goldfish a day lol...”
