I can't beleive what I just did! (Petroleum Jelly + fish = ?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ha ha patrolium jelly! I did the same thing a few years back my fish were fine I just skimmed it of the top and sped up the frequency and the water was murky but it went away two days later good luck

sometimes impellars get off ballanced and will only get quiet by being replaced with a new impellar. Check for scoring on the impellar or any irregularities on the rubber stopper at the base of the impellar.

as for the jelly....
... well...
I think that goes beyond the kind of help offered on this particular site...

... just kidding, if the fish are fine don't get stressed or do anything drastic. clean as much as you can and be sure to never do that again. The gravel will be the hardest to clean without loosing the bacteria or overly disrupting your tank. If cleaning requires more than a few gravel vac sessions you could try removing it and flushing it out with dechlorinated water or replacing it entirely.

HTH, and don't worry we have all done stupid things that sounded great at the time.

Yes very bad idea, but if it was just PURE petroleum jelly it shouldnt harm the fish in small quantities. I'm pretty sure its not even water-soluble, so it should all stay on the surface or in chunks. Either way, your filter (whatever brand/model) was designed to run using water as the only lubricant in the impeller well. If the filter is noisy, an air leak above the water line is much more likely. If you dont find any leaks, use that same PURE petroleum jelly to very lightly lubricate the o-rings inside each connection. No chunks, just a light film should seal the bubbles out & keep them from cavitating your impeller & causing all that noise.

They make "organic" lubes for such application... Check the kinky sex isle at your local head shop...

Carbon will help remove the oils...

As mentioned, petrolium jelly isn't water soluable... though it is a petrolium product so you don't want your fish eating the chunks...

Thanks for sharing the experience so others can learn from your mistake... but with proper clean up you should be fine...

PS - The ogranic lube part was a joke, they do make them but they will break down in the water and soon be useless... but they won't hurt the fish :D

Thanks everyone, it was pure petroleum jelly, I have done another 50%+ water change and the water is almost as clear as it normally is. I was worried that it may impair the ability of the fish to take oxygen from the water but there are no rapid gill movements and their behaviour is normal so I think I may have got away with it, i'll keep an eye on the water and keep up with some smaller changes just to be sure.

The have just munched a load of food so they don't seem to bothered.

There is no air being taken in by the filter, this is a different sound to the trapped air one I get when I have started it and had to shake the air out.

additional info. My eheim 2026 canister has a supplied petroleum jelly tube you can use for the o-rings and the priming pump. At first I thought wtf..but then I still used it to lube the parts of the pump and the o-ring. A while ago I lubed up the o-ring with vaseline petroleum jelly when I cleaned the canister

You beat me to it. I also use it on the seals of my cannisters with no ill effects ever. Not in copious amounts like described in this thread though:D

Thanks for the input everyone, did another water change when I woke up and the water is crystal clear again now! Fish are behaving normally and are as greedy as ever!

The only filters I've had that were that noisy are the Marineland Penguin 350's. Gawd I hate those things. Out of 8 of them ordered at once several years ago, only 1 is still running. I'd have beat the filter to peices with the jar of vasoline and forked over the money for another one.
