That pretty much sums it up. I picked up a used, but new looking HOT magnum for cheap. I had one at home already that didn't work but after a quick disassemble, cleaning, and reassemble it works great. The newer one I just picked up even has the on/off button on the outside.

My problem is that when I turn it on the impeller doesn't want to spin. I take the plastic bulb thingy out and it will spin for a few seconds and then get hung up. When I put it back together it will spin until I put the carbon cartridge on top of it then it just hums and freezes up. I'm not sure what to do. It wants to work but it feels like there's too much resistance or friction or something. I'd like everyones opinion on this, but especially someone who knows what I can do to get it working.

Thanks in advance.

When mine went out I talked to the lfs and suggested it might need an impeller.
They laughed at me and said "Those things last for like 10 years".
I smiled and said, "It's been working great for me since I bought it, used, 8 years ago"
Purchased, Installed, and it's been running for another 5years.

Man I just realized that magnum was part of my first tank purchase in 1995.
I think I got my monies worth. ;)

So I got it going somewhat, what I did was pull the pin out of the impeller and flipped it, the way it was the rubber end was up and the metal end was down, it seems to be working somewhat, I only primed it halfway as that was as far as I could do it without turning it off. When I turned it off it would start working again unless I took it apart and jiggled it.

It has only filled half way and that is all the farther it will fill, I'm not sure what to do from here...

Any suggestions?

Maybe that's all I need to do then, I do work at a Marineland dealer (LFS) as my part time job, so we might even have the part in the big unorganized parts bin lol. I'm glad to hear that they are long lasting. I got both of mine used and the older one is running like new.

My father has been running a magnum for over 10 years now. Still works like the day he bought it. I wish I could find 2 of the older ones for my tank. They work great with some diatom powder.

Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know where to get the older models at? I looked on ebay and cant find them. Only can find the newer models with the on/off button.

I've got one for sale but I'm not sure you can afford it ;)

I'll take it! Now whats a miiilion and wtf is a dorras?

why are you not filling it all the way? Is the magnet on the impeller smooth? do you have two identical magnums? If so, you could try swapping parts between the two to identify what needs to be replaced.
