In case I do pick up one of the beauties I could use some advice on their care. I have a 29 gal tank which is 30"L, 12"W that he will go in until my big tank is set up. Water Parameters are Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, and Nitrate ~20 or less. What PH should I make the tank? What should I feed him? I have crickets, wax worms on hand for my lizards, and some Freeze Dried Krill is there anything else that he'd like? Also he would be kept with a Red-Tail Payara, and Bichir or Fire Eel, but just until the big tank is cycled, and the proper biological bacteria is setup. I currently do a water change either weekly or bi-weekly on it of %20, how often would you reccomend I do it with those fish in? Also the tank is 6'L 30"W and 25"T I am under the impression that this will be big enough for the Arowana for pretty much life. Is this safe to assume, or should I expect an upgrade in the future? Thanks for any help it will be much appreciated:D

should be good enough for a black. anyhow, how big is the black you are picking up? a 29 gallon might be kinda small, I would wait till you got you big tank running. Feed the normal stuff......hikari food sticks, FD anything, gut loaded crickets/ not too many GL feeders though, market shrimp, etc.

The tank you have it now is on yhe smallish sidr, imo. Aro's come from soft acidic water. I don't know the ph and hardness it is being currently kept in, but would slowly bring it down. ( there are people at MFK who accept ph between 7 and 8 for aos. I don't ):) The food you haver is good and you should try to have her eat also pellets..with aro's, the more live food you give, the less it will accept pellets, so it is a delicate balance...if it is a small one and not a crazy feeder, I would say main thing is get her to eat, even if only live.

take care because aro's jump and die dry on the floor, through the smallest openings..

I would not keep it with the payara...:)

read up on my sticky on the silver arowana, the care information is the same for the black arowana.

no need to tamper with the pH. What water will you be using?

your final tank size will be fine :)

umm It's about 6" being kept in a 10 Gallon Cube:irked: . I would normally wait till I got a big tank running, but the Arowana is only $70!!!:headbang2 A dumb question but what is market shrimp? Where can I get it? it seems like alot of people feed these to larger fish.

Same as what I just wrote on tank size. It would only be in there for at most 3 months with weekly water changes, an Aquaclear 200, and probably a Xp3 to get it started with the Bio-load for the big tank. Allright I will try and keep the live food at a minimum. I tend to keep my tanks 6.6-7.2 because most of them are South American and O thx for reminding me about a sturdy cover I just lost a gourgeous pearl gourami to that:swear: . Why shouldn't I keep the Aro with a Red-Tail Payara thats the same size or smaller?

Umm I don't have a Tap water filter yet, but when I order my supplies I'm going to pick one up. To be honest I normally will fill up a cooler with water from tap. Then add the proper dose of Kordon NovAqua+, Amquel+, some salt, Adjust the PH, and try and get a pretty similar water temperature and dump it in. I will read your sticky on the silver. Thanks everyone for the help:headbang2

supermarket lolz but yeah how long would it take for you to get the big tank up and running because crowding it is bad but then again the lfs is worser

Yea That's what I'm thinking even though it's a small tank it's twice as big as the tank that the LFS has it in, and I know the tank size they require and would give him a proper home. That doesn't always happen when someone sees a fish they like though:( (myself included:) ).

woops forgot to add that The latest it would be ready would be Mid-July. But in June they should be added. Delgado I wish you didn't have me read your sticky:irked: . Now I want a silver again. maybe if I make it 7'L it could work for both:naughty: .
