I.D. Black Piranha

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The supplier I got it from called it a rhom, but I was told at another site it may be an undescribed species and could be rhom or compressus.

?? Here is the short version of the story! The supplier said it was a Black Piranha and I said is it a Rhombeus and he said yes. I then posted these same pics on another site and most said it was a Black Piranha (Rhombues) but the goto I.D. guy said it looks like an undescribed species he has and can't say whether its a Rhom or a Compressus. So I just wanted to see what other people thought. I wanted a Rhom,I bought a Rhom and hope its a Rhom cause its going into a 180 gallon tank. I definetly don't want a 7 to 8 inch Compressus.

I had already bought a Black Piranha at a lfs about 3 weeks ago. When I brought it home I took pics and posted them. Everybody said it was a Sanchezi!. I told they local fish store what I had found out and they took it back and gave me credit. They said they were just going by what their supplier said. Here are some pics of the Sanchezi I got instead of a Rhom.

instead, you'll have a 7 to 8 inch Rhom for a while and maybe in 2 years, if u have excellent conditions, he'll be between 10 and 12 inches...rhoms are very slow growers, hope you knew...

he looks like either a guyana rhom or xingu... not to sure seeing how there are so many varieties. but i would def. say it's not a compressus.
the second pics are definetly a sanchezi

a rhom is a rhom you cant tell the collection point for normal rhoms from pics
unless the imported told you where it was caught you cant tell
