japes... that's S. jurupari though, Rio Mormon is one of the locations Martgarita Tours collects every year, definitely no leucosticta there. In the article they hint at two types in Peru and I think they mean strictly S. cf. jurupari type fish and when they refer to "jurupari-group fish that are delayed mouth brooders I think they refer to leucosticta. I can ask Lee just to be sure. I've talked to Devon a lot about collecting in Peru and he's only mentioned jurupari but he did say they don't collect all of the Rio Ucayali so maybe there is a chance.

"Aquarium picture of Satanoperca leucosticta from the Mormon river in Perú.Photo by Lee Newman. determiner Lee Newman."

My fish are Peruvian S. jurupari, and they sport a blotch on the upper caudal peduncle. I can try to take a pic but with my cam it won't be contributing a whole lot. They've got diagonal striping from the eye down toward the mouth, and none of the spangling typical of S. leucosticta, visible in the Newman pic above.

Hi japes... sorry, i stand corrected! That's a different link. It's interesting that Devon doesn't collect them there. It's weird that cichlidae lists the fish in the image from Rio Mormon but then doesn't list Peru under it's distribution. Kullander doesn't list Peru either, but his work with Satanoperca is old.

Just out of interest Ed, do your S. leucosticta show the blotch on the upper half of the caudal peduncle? I had a look through your C-F thread but couldn't find appropriate shots of the adults.

I believe the Datz books have shots of a couple of variants (showing the difference between the Suriname and Guyana variants from memory - I haven't picked up my copy yet) - Any other ideas for trying to properly determine origin? Good references are hard to find. Very curious though as I've designed my tank around the Essequibo River without any real knowledge of their origin, and since I'm in the midst of totally redeveloping the tank, swapping out the H. roseacus that are currently housed with them if they truly aren't the Essequibo variety wouldn't be difficult at all.

Yes, all mine have the spot. It seems like most populations do. The only thing I know about the populations is the ones from Guyana and Rio Xingu have a lot of red and the others less so. The S. sp. "Amazonas Red" also have a lot of red on the operculum, but breeds differently.

You guys are awesome. I will try and get some new pics up here soon to try and help out. The fish is about 3-4 inches
