I bought this pike cichlid for 11.99 but it was labeled as pike cichlid lol

It appears to be a juvenile crenicichla strigata, striped pike cichlid.

If he got it at Big Al's; which I am guessing he did, then It is a Strigata, I know the stock manager at my local big al's and what he said is that their stocking lists are always pretty much the same, most of the branches in ontario even order from the same suppliers; or so I'm told. They've been getting Strigata for a good month now.

I'd wait and see what the fish developes into before assuming they are strigata based on a 'stocking list'. Unless Big Al's always gets there pikes from the exact same source and one has already seen what these pikes grow into as a mature adult(?).

Once it transforms into it's adult coloration, then it will be obvious wether it's a venny or a strigata. Juvies of these 2 species are really not distinguishable.

As far as I know they get their SA stock from 4 different vendors, the likely hood that these two stores get there stock from the same place isn't remote. Also as "rare" as strigata are supposed to be, the fact of the matter is that they have had them before, and yes I mean a full blown adult specimen not some inconclusive juvenile specimen. I will not deny the fact that a venny is still a possibility, but I am not at fault if it happens to be one; I would simply be accountable for being misinformed, and I'm pretty sure everyone's been there before. I guess the best way to find out for sure is to wait it out. Either way, both species are beautiful.
