Juv. strigata normally have a humeral blotch of some sort, vens lack it. Plus strigata are generally Brazilian in origin. These two things kind of stack the odds against it being strigata, but like you said there is still a chance that it is. From that picture though I am leaning hard towards sp. 'venezuela', due to the coloration, as well as the ease of import.

It would be fantastic to see this guy grow up and settle the debate though!!! Crenicichla are freaking awesome aye!?

I was there today, and though I HATE to admit it, I'm probably wrong.. I was asking about the last shipment they got which included the pikes, & he said the shipment came from the same place my wolf did; Peru.. Venezuela apparently doesn't ship livestock directly out of the continent, but they would ship it to peru then to the upper americas from there. I can definitely back that up, because of shipping altercations involving a previously owned "piranha" Brazil has similar shipping policies to venezuela, so I guess it would be the same procedure, but I am also aware that getting shipments out of brazil is nowhere near easy, so it's most likely a sp. from venezuela..
